There is a huge difference between gold and gold-plated — the real education that matters in the gem and jewellery business.
This is a short clip from an impromptu, free-flowing discussion with some of the delegates from the gem and jewellery industry who came to participate in the 73rd Bangkok International Gem and Jewellery Show, with the same selected group chosen by the GIT who are visiting again for Level 2 of their education.
I quite like this group, because for the first time they were facing an unprecedented situation that they have not experienced in their fathers’ time.
Besides competition from online channels to big conglomerates entering jewellery, two wild fluctuations in the stock market, the sudden spike in prices of gold, and finally a war or a conflict-like situation with nearly zero sales during the festival season added to what I call their bewilderment mix.
However, in this short video clip, I speak about the real education that matters, and for a person with the right aptitude, with a bit of luck, just the information in this short two-minute clip is worth a minimum of $1 million or more.
But let me add two to three more brief lines to make this more rounded and complete.
For the sake of simplicity and clarity, I classify individuals in the gem and jewellery business into four broad stages. The first is Laghu (small), representing those who are beginning their journey, learning the basics, and operating at a foundational level. The second is Madhyam (medium), where one has gained some stability, understanding, and consistency in operations. Beyond this comes the Growth Phase, where exposure, networking, and scaling decisions become critical. Finally, there is the Large Scale, where brand positioning, global presence, and strategic dominance define the game. Each stage demands a different environment, a different level of investment, and most importantly, a different mindset — confusing one stage for another often leads to misplaced effort, wasted resources, and delayed success.
In simple terms:
Laghu means you are learning and starting small.
Madhyam means you have some stability and understanding.
Growth phase means you are expanding, networking, and scaling.
Large scale means you are operating at a global level with strong positioning and influence.
Having an education and a degree from an acclaimed and recognised jewellery institute is like having some kind of prequalification or an ID card to enter this high-value business. For 99.9% of the people, it is just that. Less than 0.1% of the people would build on the education and the network they achieved during the course to either further their gemological studies or research, or to be a success in the gem trade.
This is a high-risk, high-stakes trade, and I explain the four various stages in less than two minutes, along with the key events and fairs to attend depending on the stage where you are, along with the latest financial commitment you might need for these events.
At the risk of being really risqué, let me say with full clarity and conviction that what I say over here is Brahma Vani. For example, spending seven days in China attending the Canton Fair would 2X your vision, your contacts, your bottom line — but the most important thing is that you will see with your own eyes, first-hand, how fast the world is moving, and then you will pick up what is necessary and applicable to you.
