A student of mine — a 67-year-old agriculturist from Devgad, Maharashtra — presented me with the first fruits of his personal harvest: perfect Alphonso Mangoes, plucked with devotion, blessed by the Sun’s exaltation.

When I think of mangoes,
I cannot help but be transported back to a summer of my childhood —
to a memory shining brighter than gold.
My maternal grandfather,
Lt. Col. Dr. J. N. Dutt, AMC- A distinguished Doctor of the Army Medical Corps
a decorated officer of two World Wars,
an impeccably dressed man of discipline and dignity,
once drove us 200 kilometers from the city in his elegant pearl-white Ambassado. Yes, He was in his 3 piece suit in that fiery desert heat of Rajasthan.
In the searing heat of April,
he took us to a remote mango orchard —
armed only with buckets half-filled with ice,
quarter-filled with water,
and hearts full of excitement.
He asked us to pick mangoes to our heart’s content,
chill them in the buckets,
and eat until the evening fell.
The day was magical —
laughter under the sun,
the taste of ripe sweetness,
the thrill of abundance.
But slowly, something unexpected happened.
The excitement wore off.
The novelty faded.
Greed numbed into simplicity.
And then I understood.
Grandfather wasn’t just letting us eat mangoes.
