People chase covers.

Sometimes, the cover chases you.

In a world where everyone is selling an image,

Mine were moments — raw, unscripted, unrehearsed.

This post came about when a French Journalist attending the prestigious International Watch week asked me two questions:

Your covers are quite unconventional- which is your favourite one and how did they come about?

What do you think of conventional print media in this day and age of social? What has been your personal and organisations PR strategy.

So Hence and Here Goes

None of these covers happened through PR( my personal experience with such kinds has not been very good- to use a reasonably civil and muted expression.. on a Personal level SBC

 

THE AVIATION WORLD MOMENT

During the pandemic, while the world wore fear like a mask, I wore Rudraksha beads and walked up the Peninsula rooftop helipad for a shoot.

A Lady Gaga rep had requested a bottle of Gucci Guilty to be “charged” in my presence.

The result?

One of the most striking Aviation World covers — helicopter blades whirring, wind howling, a world frozen midair — and no budget, no PR agency.

Just power.

Karma flies first class and Yes It was also 23 September- a celebration of a birthday and the Gemstoneuniverse foundation day where there were no people and no money and a lockdown.

That was a statement- that come what may .. GEMSTONEUNIVERSE IS THERE.. But as because as we see

WALL STREET “BANNED” COVER

They called me the Phantom.

Money was chasing me, not the other way around. Three of my posts made some people mighty uncomfortable and some scared two:

When the Wall Street cover dropped, it read:

“BANNED.”

Because light doesn’t need a permit to shine.

It just arrives.

THE BVLGARI CODE

Wearing the colours of Venus & Mercury,

I walked into Bvlgari not to sway —

But to feel the stone’s soul.

The staff bowed.

The energy bowed.

A fragrance vial in my hand.

A portal in motion.

The 3 epic fragrances developed in the honour of the 3 mighty Chinese emperors and named “ LA GEMME”- The Gem

Result? A personal campaign that outshone sponsored ads.

INLIFE INTERNATIONAL – THE GLOBAL DREAMER

A GQ cover was being discussed.

The InLife team caught me mid-flight,

in my saffron robe, boarding a helicopter.

They didn’t ask for poses.

They captured purpose.

“Ready to take on 2022?” the tagline read.

Truth is, we were already living in 2027.

STAR CENTRAL – THE DON OF DESTINY

One of their most-read editions.

Not because I looked like a model.

But because people could feel

I mentor minds, not just looks.

Spirituality. Luxury. Millionaire Mindsets.

That’s not a tag.

That’s a tatva.

SHINING ASIAN — THE MAVERICK OF MEANING

They said:

“Guruji, you don’t fit any category.”

My answer:

“Maybe because I built a new one.”

This cover became a movement —

Aviation Maverick.

Lover of Stones.

Mentor of Mentors.

SASSY & CO — THE UNEXPECTED ICON

Imagine this:

I sketch something at a Claude Monet exhibit.

A photographer sees it.

Clicks.

A magazine editor gasps.

And boom —

I’m the cover, standing amidst surreal Monet-esque lights.

No pitch.

No filter.

Just flow.

SIMPLY BANGALORE – THE ORIGIN POINT (2006)

This is where it began.

Before hashtags. Before filters.

Just me, gemstones, faith, and fire.

India Today spotted the spark.

They asked: “Who is this man?”

Not a gem seller.

But a gem whisperer.

Some small facts and directives:

I have been featured in mainstream media since the age of 12 and at that time, primarily due to debating ,extempore, cricket and my contribution to editorial questions.

Between the ages of 16 and 19, when Times of India was still the biggest newspaper and it still is but now with a lot of rubbish Ads - I was one of the favourite contributors where every week they had a burning question, relevant to that current time, and they absolutely loved my contributions.

Tryst with PR

I would classify this as a feeling that is to the movie title, kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

The first tryst with PR was roughly around 2002, 2003 good decent people and I landed up an interview with one of the major newspapers in South India.

Five minutes into the interview. The journalist asked the PR agent to leave and then in the Oberoi hotel in Bangalore, sitting in the garden and sipping tea, I had one of the most wonderful interactions that lasted for two hours.

The result was prominent story that led to several calls at that time -when there was only the landline phone and around 45 consultations & that stream has still not stopped, and some of the people I met and consulted are still in touch with me. I thank the journalist but to the so called PR. No, thank you never again.

The result of the above interview and subsequent developments was getting full interview in Times of India and then contributing an article titled the fear of Friday The 13th is quite irrational and then having a TV interview with TV today from the India today group. They say any publicity is good publicity, but to be honest, I didn’t quite like it because the times of Indy interview carried oblique reference to my relation with certain politicians, including Soniaji, and then the first taste of how things can be twisted, came in the TV today programme in which selective portions of my answers were stitched together to give an entirely different meaning. It is at that time, I nearly cut off most media interactions and put a single condition that if I would give any interview, it would be live and the media agency share with me the original footage.

The second tryst with PR & Media was quite average, and then a good thing became a bad thing.

Getting featured in a magazine with the stature of fortune that wanted to do a story on the beautiful heaven, we created at number 7 Indiranagar and called as the Gemstoneuniverse boutique store but thing in the bad taste, was somebody claiming to own my own photography equipment, and the investment that I had put as his.

To put the record straight. I still do not have the original photographs of that interaction, which are actually my intellectual property?

The third stint in the PR world was pretty pedestrian, and I had no direct interaction with the coverage or the PR people that is a totally forgettable stint.

So coming to the French journalist’s question that which is my favourite cover, that would be a hard choice, but if I were to make one single choice, that would be the global millionaire cover because that story was broken by an Israeli journalist, and that is a totally natural organic picture with me in saffron and dark shades.

There are two things in that picture number one is that business magazine with the statue of global millionaire went ahead and showed journalism of courage and instead of normally posed picture of a standard professional head shot in a navy blue, grey or black suit.

Here I was unfiltered and raw coming back after getting close to 300 people affected by the virus in hospital.

That would have to be my favourite cover, I would also like a special mention of the cover of sassy because in the background is a Claude Mone masterpiece, work of art and the tagline,that reads Guruji Sri Arnav, the dream we dream -that was quite fascinating and I was quite flattered, but it is also worthwhile to say and express my gratitude to sassy that I was the first man ever to be featured on the cover since 1960 that cover has always been raised by wonderful women.

What most don’t know, and I would like it to remain like that , was a cover released in a foreign country that had me instead of the PM. because the President of that country thought I look more prettier, thank you so much, but that landed me in a lot of problems.

My mistake:

The only time I intervened and interfered in an editor’s job was to change my placement in an important cover and that was accomplished, but later I realised that that was actually not a very Guruji like thing because they were other people on that cover and the editor had to do the entire exercise of getting their approvals on the revised cover.

Today specifically , I apologise to one man who very graciously said, seeing the modified cover that this is the way the original cover should have been, but I am very sorry Sir. I wasted precious moments of your time.

The Good thing and Not So Good Thing:

The most important thing that media does is adds to a person and cause public awareness.

The good thing is that most of the media mentions that I discuss in the above post are still on the internet and that gives a huge credibility to the body of work that I have done and to Gemstoneuniverse -who have major media clippings since the year 2002 is a good thing - These are on the internet and searchable.

The Not so Good thing , losing despite being Victorious and the Power of Manthra and Maya

All the covers featured today in today’s video are big ticket covers with no PR jobs.

They are all organic and to be on the cover of a Forbes or a GQ to a regular person would be into climbing the Himalayas or working very hard to their ultimate level of patience for a sustained period of time and being on the cover is like a golden jewel in a person‘s life and it does not happen to lot of people.

The issue which I say is the not so good thing is that such as the force of Maya and Manthra that had it been different people, they would have Tom Tom-ED these achievements and congratulated me and put a Garland and would have taken pride.

My thing is that the so called people who matter to me, or maybe have some kind of appreciation of how the media works did not bother to congratulate me or even hit a like - but that being said whatever it is, my heart is in the right place and I will keep working and even though my victory turns into defeat -whenever I lay down for that scarce amount of sleep- I lay down with the feeling that I have done a good job and I get a good rest for 1-2 hours. They’re alignments.

Proof that when Karma, Kaushal, and Kismat unite,

even the world’s best printers can’t deny your presence.

I didn’t chase the spotlight.

I carried it.
