Case in Point, Both Me and my wife ordered a Gemstone report. I was recommended no gemstones and it was clearly stated why I did not need any Gemstones. However she was recommended a Yellow Sapphire and Red Coral and we implemented that for her asap. I had ordered a Gem report and was recommended a Hessonite and Emerald post wearing the Hessonite for 3 months. I ordered the hessonite online and it was a satisfactory experience. Since I had to attend a Conference at Bangalore in 2 months time I decided to visit Gemstoneuniverse in person to choose my Emerald since it is a pretty expensive gem and I am doing this kind of remedy for first time. Even though there are many things to say about the Gemstoneuniverse facility the two most remarkable things that made an impact on me and were really impressive were:

1) When I sat down at the table where they show the Gems- a Gemologist first greeted me and introduced himself by showing me his id card from the prestigious GIA School and said He would be attending me today. This made me very comfortable.

2) Their focus is fantastic and attention to detail to give the best to the client is also excellent. Above the Table there is a light system (Sorry I am no Gem expert so I don’t know what exactly its called), that lets you view the Gemstone as it would look inside the room in artificial light and then they switch it over to show the gem exactly as it would look like in normal sunlight. This was absolutely a new experience from me. I have purchased some Diamonds for my wife and mother but none of the places had such facility. The Gemologist explained to me that the lighting system is to give you the best possible view and that Emeralds should never be bought on a cloudy day as they look more beautiful than they actually might be. The light system that replicates true sunlight completely takes away all these factors.

All in all a new experience and a wondrous one at that. If you are really into Gemstones or want to wear Gemstones for Luck then this place is it!

” I will tell a story A true story. A year back, fed up with many problems, I decided to wear a gem with out knowing anything about them. Ours is a beautiful small town called Alleppey ( Alappuzha ) of Kerala. There I consulted an austrogemologist who sells gems from his shop and locally accepted as an expert. With in few minutes, after analyzing my birth details with his computer, he recommended me to wear a Cats Eye”. He explained about every gem especially about the cats eye as on the original gem we can see seven straight bands of light etc. During that long talk, in regular intervals, he repeated the words I am not greedy, I will not get anything from this trade, I am doing it as a service only. Don’t forget to refer your friends and relatives to me which make me suspicious. There I saw many gems but all cats eyes cost Rs. 2500/-, Emerald Rs. 4500/-, Blue Sapphire Rs. 6000/- etc. and Rs. 500/- extra for certification. I was not particular to by from him or not. I left the place after offering him to come back soon. The I started research, visited some jewelers who is famous for selling pure gold but not satisfied with their gem knowledge. Then I accidently came across the article Do gems Work? which changed everything. Got educated by spending 1-2 hours everyday and ordered for a gem recommendation. But not sure to buy from them because of financial constrains. Wandered many places to get jyothish quality gems but failed. “When it comes to alternate therapy like Gemstone, Rudraksh and the likes , I was an absolute non believer.Reason being,about 8 years ago when I was going through some tough time at work , I was advised by an “astrologer” to wear emerald gemstone.Accordingly I bought a emerald stone from him. Semi precious stones ? Wondering what are these, A frequent question that I often see addressed to Gemstoneuniverse and also the one that has been asked to me countless times : Do Upratnas or Semi-Precious Stones Work? If they do, how effective are they? Can they be considered equally effective as the Navaratanas? Before we dwell into answers of the above questions we should be very clear about what exactly is an Upratna or Uparatana?

Definition of an Upratna?

An Upratna or Semi-Precious Stones are a superior substitute to a Navratna- one of the Nine precious Gemstones. I frankly do not like calling a Gemstones Semi- precious, though some do, purely from the point of view of convenience. However, do note that a Gem Quality and a Jyotish Quality Semi Precious Gemstone is a valuable Gemstone.

The important thing here being- Gem Quality and Jyotish Quality. Even though Indian sacred texts list the use of 84 such semi precious Gemstones, my attempt here is to share information about those substitute gemstones that deliver the best results. This is based on experience and statistical results of many years.

What are the Navratnas?

The Nine Primary planetary Gemstones prescribed in the Shastras (sacred texts) are called the Navratnas (literally translated means nine gems). These are listed below:

You will find this list on more than 100,000 websites.

So what is the point of making this list yet again?

Well, it is relevant to our discussion. If you look at the list closely – Pearl, Red Coral, Hessonite and Cat’s Eye are classified in the gem trade as Semi Precious Gemstones for the sake of convenience, whereas the description of Shastras is accurate, factual – these are among the Nine Precious Gemstones representing the Nine Planets.  All these Navratanas have to be gem quality and Jyotish quality to deliver planetary results.

Please make note that in the Shastras the term Semi-Precious (or allusion to a category indicating monetary value) does NOT exist.

Listed in the sacred texts are Upratnas – Superior Substitute Gemstones to be used in lieu of the 9 primary precious Gemstones for getting planetary energies and benefits. And this is what is exactly meant by Upratnas.

In the Indian sacred texts 84 Upratanas have been mentioned. Each of them is used for achievement of an objective or a desire, for resolution for a medical condition, for wealth, for attracting the right partner and for different planets.

Here I shall mention those, which are the best Uparatnas for the nine planetary gemstones. Even though, the efficacy of Agates/ Haqiq, Malachite/ Dana Firang etc.are legendary, we shall restrict our discussion to the Uparatnas of the nine planetary gemstones.

 

Best Upratnas/ Best Substitute Gemstones for Planetary Energies

*Yellow Topaz is precious and rare and in many instances gives results that are as potent as a Yellow Sapphire. It should not be confused with abundantly available and much lesser priced Citrine, which does NOT give results as a Yellow Sapphire alternative.

** Colorless Top Quality treatment-free Zircon is a potent Uparatana and gives good results. It is often mistakenly called as Jerkin, Zarcan by ill-informed individuals.

*** In the columns marked none – I have not found any gemstone that bought in superior results.

What we have here is a list of 14 gemstones out of 84 choices. These are the best alternatives and deliver results that are satisfactory. I have mentioned only those, which I have noticed delivering quantifiable results first hand. Others also do work but the effect is not quite comparable to these.

Moving on to the second part of the query – Are they effective? And can they be considered as effective as Navratnas?

Yes, upratnas are effective and they provide good results provided they are GEM quality and Jyotish Quality. If Not, Then no results.

The demand of Jewellery industry are so high that today most of the market is flooded with Semi Precious Gemstones – not necessarily Upratnas (Read what actually are Uparatnas above) that go through several treatments such as radiation, dyeing etc. to improve appearance. Treated Gemstones will give no results for Jyotish Purposes.

Jyotish Quality= Gem Quality + Free from Treatment + Free from any kind of flaws listed in the scared texts.

Where Gem Quality means that a Gem excels on the all 4C’s of Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat weight.

Are Uparatanas as effective as the Nine Primary Gemstones?

Well, there is no unit of measure or yardstick where the results between delivered by them can be compared. Here’s an example to help you understand better –  if we were to travel from point A to point B, we could do that by an aeroplane or on a motorcycle.

You can compare the results of Jyotish Quality Navratnas as that of an aeroplane and that of Jyotish quality Upratnas as that of a motorcycle. The important part is that they get the job done that is to traverse the distance and reach point B.

Upratnas create miracles and are a fantastic starting point for Gem Therapy. Some of them such as Peridot and Yellow Topaz have many extra benefits in addition to the planetary benefits.

Mull on this – Gem quality Green Jade( Jadeite), mentioned as one of the Upratnas among the 84 that find mention in the sacred texts is known as Sang-E-Yashab ( Classified as Semi Precious in some trade circles) and is excellent for heart health, is sometimes more expensive per carat than a Ruby, Sapphire or an Emerald. In case you happen to try an upratna and it spins some magic for you, You would be inseparable from your talisman, rendering your upratna invaluable. Therefore, there are no precious and semiprecious gems – just gemstones!

Recently we received a question from one of our patrons that says:

I was reading Guruji’s article about gemstone therapy and not removing one’s gemstone after wearing it at an auspicious time. I have tried to follow this rule but have one question. After prolonged use, soap scum and lotion residue build up beneath the gemstone in the area where the gemstone touches the finger. Is it alright to remove the gemstone for just a few minutes (occasionally, let’s say once every month) to clean the gemstone and wear it again on the auspicious day for the gemstone?

Also – sometimes the gemstone slips off of the finger by accident for a few seconds – can one put the ring back on immediately after it slips off the finger?

Such questions are received periodically by us, hence this write up:

How to clean your Planetary Gemstone ring

Here is the method that gives good results:

– Clean your gemstone rings and pendant once every month so that scintillation remains and the gemstones provide maximum reflection of light besides looking beautiful.

– Choose the correct day for cleaning. Each Gemstone has its unique day. The list is given below.

– Use a gentle soft solution or a mild detergent as the cleansing solution. Keep away from harsh detergents and Jewelry cleaning solutions.

– If there is not a lot of dirt then simply take the ring till the edge of the finger and use a new cotton ear bud to wipe off the dirt.

– If there is a lot of dirt take a new Toothbrush with Gentle bristles and dip it in the mild soap solution. Take the Gemstone ring till the edge of the finger and clean the below surface. Keep this toothbrush separate as a part of your Gemstone cleaning kit.

– Wash with plain, clean water after clearing the dust and the dead skin if any.

– Push the ring back into its original position.

By using this method in no manner your ring leaves body contact. With a little bit of practice you can do it easily.

Be very careful when cleaning Organic Gemstones like Red Coral and Natural pearl and also Gemstones that have less hardness like Emerald. Use a mild soap solution, mild detergent solution or solution of your bathing bar. Stay away from harsh detergents and Jewelry cleaning kits.

Putting the Shine Back

Sometimes the lustre and shine of your Red Coral or Emerald may appear less after cleaning. This is quite natural. Just apply a tiny bit of your face cream to the surface and your gemstone regains its glitter and Shine.

Accidental slipping of the ring

Just put it back right away. No effects on the results are noticed.

As all of you must have noticed dear patrons, December 2010 has been hectic for us here at Gemstoneuniverse. In the last month we have uploaded new lots of Emeralds, Natural Pearls, Red Corals, and Heliodors etc.

In the queue is a massive lot of unheated Yellow Sapphires, red Garnets and this special lot of Bue Sapphires from Nivitigala-Sri Lanka.

Each of these Blue Sapphires is “one in a million”. Good symmetry in cut, eye clean, deep Kashmir Blue color and great size with being fully unheated and untreated make these Blue Sapphires very special. From our rough Orion2110 these are currently getting photographed and should be uploaded soon.
