And that is what Colombian emeralds are known best for.

Emerald is a relatively soft stone vis-Ã -vis many other colored stones. It measures a 7.5 – 8 on the Mohs Scale. Â It requires a little extra care compared to other gemstones. Because of this property, the gem is usually fashioned in the classic emerald cut also known as the octagonal step cut to give it added stability. Oval gems are therefore rare.
