Comments How interesting would it get for you to be told that the first blue sapphire was perhaps worn by the immortal Titan Prometheus? Well, interesting and intriguing it is for most mythological details fall in place!

Before we explore the Prometheus connection, have a look at the amazing natural unheated Ceylon blue sapphire featured today. An oval cut gem of 3.12 carats with fascinating silky cornflower blue  color set in sterling silver as a Saturn talisman ring. The gemstone has excellent clarity and electric lustre.

Blue sapphire or neelam gemstone is a powerful gem that hosts the transformative planetary energies of Lord Saturn/ Shanidev. While There is no doubt that blue sapphire has intense stirring energy, one must also not be too taken in by the myriad stories/ myths that have been made up about the gem. The only two factors one must keep in mind are –
A) whether the gem is natural, treatment free and also free from the doshas listed in the sacred texts to watch against in a gemstone to be deemed fit as a jyotish gem.
B) whether you have got a proper gem recommendation.

Going back to Prometheus, he is regarded to be the first one to wear a blue sapphire – Prometheus (his name literally translates to one with foresight – he was able to predict future) in Greek mythology is known as the creator of human beings/ mortals. When he saw the mortals unable to deal with vagaries of nature, he asked the gods to lend them fire; a request that was turned down immediately.

Prometheus then decided and stole fire from the gods and gave it to the mortals. Zeus, upon watching the blazing fire pits of mortals, decided to give exemplary punishment to immortal Prometheus. He had him chained to a rock and ordered a giant eagle (symbol of Zeus) to eat away at his liver. The torment would continue day after day for eons as Prometheus’ liver would regenerate each night!

Prometheus chained to a rock

Depiction of Hercules a.k.a Heracles rescuing Prometheus

A twist in the tale led to Hercules rescuing Prometheus. His chain was severed from the rock but a link remained around his finger and attached to that link was a piece of rock – the alleged first blue sapphire! Zeus agreed to pardon and release him, upon the condition that Prometheus would wear that link forever!

Gemstoneuniverse.com Table Natural Amethyst Gemstone Facts

Amethyst is a purple gem that belongs to the quartz group and has a hardness of 7 on Moh’s scale. The gem comes in several shades of purple, lilac, lavender and sometimes exhibits rosy hues too. Most of the Amethyst available in the market is heat treated, (to give it a better – deep and rich color) unless stated otherwise.

Amethyst also known as jamunia or katela is the substitute gem of natural blue sapphire or the neelam gemstone.  It is a gem that can be used to harness the saatvik energies of planets Saturn /Shanidev.

The metaphysical properties of amethyst are well known. It is a healing gem that is believed to cure addiction to alcohol and also protect the wearer against the evil eye. Interestingly, the name of the gem comes from the Greek word a– (“not”) and methustos (“intoxicated”) i.e. a gem that prevents the wearer from falling prey to drunkenness.

Comments All gemstones naturally have an allure and appeal. However, aside of quality of the gem, the lapidary also makes a tremendous amount of difference to the overall appeal of the gem.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZJ9WZALZAA

Lapidary is derived from the word lapis or stone and refers to the art of cutting and polishing of gemstones. The term lapidary takes in its ambit all of the many techniques used to make a raw gemstone more attractive and useful. While some gemstones like turquoise are polished, others must be cut to get the best out of them.

Featured today is a beautiful natural Madagascar Iolite of 2.06 carats set in sterling silver as a Saturn talisman ring. Please note that this is a Planetary Bhasma Iolite ring where the shami/khejri bhasma – the sacred herbal ash of the herb of planet Saturn has been sealed into the tubular channel, which stands as a design element on the sides of the gem.

The cushion cut iolite has excellent clarity and a royal bluish violet color, exceptional among iolites – for a moment it has you wondering if it is indeed a blue sapphire! The gem has a beautiful checkerboard cut. The gem is cut into a multitude of square facets spaced regularly around the stones surface, giving a ‘Checkerboard’ effect of light and dark squares when moved in the light.

Natural iolite or neeli gem, is a substitute gem for natural Blue Sapphire/ neelam gemstone and is used to harness the saatvik energies of Planet Saturn/ Shanidev in planetary gem therapy.

Comments The very blue of clear seas – the vast expansive blue that fills your heart with hope and endless possibilities. The power of the color is tremendous, not just with the symbolism inherent in it or because of the ideas that it can foster, but more so because of the energy it carries that allows it to help manifest changes, rather transformations!

Such is the expansive  blue color of the cushion cut Natural Ceylon Blue sapphire featured today. The natural, treatment free Blue Sapphire from Sri Lanka has a fair jyotish weight of 2.43 carats and has astounding clarity and intense, sparkly lustre. This gem with scintillating cornflower blue color has been set in sterling silver as a Saturn Talisman ring. Note that the symbol of Saturn stands in relief on the shanks of the ring.

In Vedic Astrology, natural Blue sapphire or neelam gemstone is the gem of Lord Saturn / Shanidev and is a very potent tool for harnessing the extremely powerful yet saatvik energies of this planet.

One must make sure that while implementing gem therapy, for successful results only the jyotish quality, treatment free, flawless natural gemstones should be used in the talisman. A natural gemstone takes millions of years to form inside the earth – only logical to conclude that cosmic energy has condensed in absolutely pure form over such period of time.

Gems that have been subject to any kind of treatment (please note that heat treated Yellow/ blue sapphires are subjected to intense heat of approximately 1700-1800 degree C to enhance color!) cannot be used for gem therapy. The natural cosmic energy of the gem have been tampered with or corrupted by human intervention, solely for the purpose of getting a better price for the gem.

So, would you use such a gem for your planetary gem therapy or choose a natural, jyotish quality gem?

Comments Now here is one of the beautiful gems that sold off, no sooner it came in! The discerning patron knows when not to waste time in thinking over rare treasures of the earth.

Featured today is a completely natural, unheated and treatment free Blue Sapphire from Srilanka. The oval cut blue sapphire of 1.63 carats is a wonderful deep royal blue that reflects the color of midnight skies in summer! The gem has fantastic clarity and has been set in sterling silver as a Saturn talisman ring.

What sets aside the Srilankan Blue sapphire from rest of the blue sapphires is the good color, excellent clarity and the sparkly lustre, which is to say that these gems score really well on the 4 C’s among natural treatment free blue sapphires from other sources. Just put one of the Srilankan Blue sapphire next to a blue sapphire from any other source and you ll know what we mean.

Blue Sapphire or the neelam gemstone is the gem of Lord Saturn / Shanidev and is used to harness his saatvik energies that can lead to transformation and qualitative changes in life. A planetary gem with such clarity can promise to clear any confusion in life and move ahead with focus and determination.

Comments There is a fest of the oh-so-rare happening or so it seems. Every time you look at a gem with the wonderment of a child, it just seems like a completely novel subject by itself.

Featured today is a beautiful Indraneelam gemstone a 3.49 carat rainbow blue natural Ceylon sapphire that is completely free from any treatment. The magnificent oval cut gem from Srilanka, is a resplendent violet-blue in color, that shows different shades of blue as light falls on it. The gem has been set in Sterling silver as a Saturn Talisman ring.

Indraneelam is a gem that has a blue tinged with violet in it, that gives it the rainbow blue color. It is simply fascinating – the sheer range of a single color that can exist in the world of gemstones and the vast comparisons that are made to index these shades!

Yet, to the discerning and knowledgeable eye – It just knows when it sees it!

Blue Sapphire or neelam gemstone is the gem of Lord Saturn/ Shani and is used to harness his saatvik energies.

Comments Once in a while a gem comes along and you know that it’s something that may not come by any time soon again. That it is great fortune to be able to gaze upon it and hold it in your hand.

Featured today is a Natural Burmese Blue Sapphire of 1.54 carats. This oval shaped gem has an intense color – deep royal blue, one look and you will be mesmerized by its beauty. Fully natural unheated blue sapphire, this one has great clarity, despite the saturation of color. The ring has the symbol of Saturn standing in relief on the shanks.

The land of golden pagodas – Burma or Myanmar as it is known, has been the land that has produced world’s most finest and coveted gemstones. It is another story that the blue sapphires from Burma were legendary at one time but the markets soon went dry. The rubies and sapphires (remember both are minerally the same , corundum) from Burma are toast of the gem world.

So when you see a Burmese Blue sapphire, you know you have laid your hands on real bounty.

Comments “Blue color is everlastingly appointed by the deity to be a source of delight.” —   John Ruskin

Some where deep down in our hearts we have a speculation that Ruskin’s words were inspired by the Sapphire – royal, majestic and so powerful!

Featured today is a natural Ceylon Blue Sapphire of carats, set in 22 karat gold as a Saturn Talisman ring. This Oval shaped Blue sapphire from Sri Lanka with a fantastic jyotish weight of 4.49 carats is fully natural and treatment free. The gem with excellent clarity possesses the coveted Silky cornflower blue color – a rich, delightful color that inspires much more than just poetry.

Natural Blue sapphire of neelam gemstone is the gemstone of planet Saturn/ Shanidev and is used to harness his saatvik, transformative energies.

And when there is a blue sapphire in question, there are hundreds of myths and legends surrounding the gem! It would be worthwhile to point that the great story of Dushyanta and Shakuntala has a Blue Sapphire playing the pivotal role in it.

After King Dushyanta has secretly married Shakuntala he started on his way back to his kingdom but before leaving he gave her a blue sapphire ring and promised that he would come back to get her.

Raja Ravi Verma’s Painting – Shakuntala turning to take a glimpse of King Dushyant

Shakuntala, lovelorn waited endlessly for the king to return and on one such day as she sat reminiscing about the time spent with the King, she forgot to pay respects to Durvasa rishi, who temper was known far and wide. He cursed her that the person whose thoughts she was engrossed in would forget her.

When the sage got to know her story, his rage subsided and he said that the king would remember Shakuntala if she showed him a token/ gift of remembrance.

Shakuntala thought of the ring and set about to meet the king. However, as fate would have it, while in a boat she ran her hands through the sparkling waters and the ring slipped from her fingers to be swallowed by a fish.

Without the ring, she met a very indifferent king who failed to recognise her. Dejected she returned to the forests, where the legendary King Bharat was born to her.

Later after a couple of years had gone by a fisherman turned up at the palace with a brilliant blue sapphire ring that he had found in the stomach of a fish he had caught. King Dushyanta was immediately reminded of Shakuntala and finally went on to find his forgotten wife and son and bring them back to his kingdom.

Comments All that is put in word is the un uttered song of creation. Especially when it goes on to describe the breathtaking beauty that has workings of the primordial force within it.

Featured today is an enchanting natural Ceylon Blue sapphire of 3. 66 carats set in sterling silver as a Saturn Talisman ring. This unheated blue sapphire has a vibrant sky blue color and excellent clarity. The oval shaped gem has good jyotish weight and is a good piece for planetary gem therapy.

According to Vedic Astrology, natural blue sapphire or neelam gemstone is the gem of Saturn / Lord Shani and is used to harness his saatvik energies. However, in the Western world, Sapphire is regarded as the September month birthstone and its virtue is described thus:

A maiden born when autumn leaves
Are rustling in September’s breeze,
A Sapphire on her brow should bind;
To bring her joy and peace of mind.

Blue sapphire has been long used by ancients for metaphysical properties and was widely believed to be a protective stone as well as one that could cure excessive heat in the body and venom related troubles.
