Greek legend also the Moon Goddess Selene begins her journey when the days end, and lights up the Earth with the radiance of her immortal head, and golden crown! The name Selene is derived from the Greek word Selas, meaning Brightness! Often, she has been depicted as riding a horse or bull, wearing robes and a half-moon on her head and carrying a torch.

In Vedic mythology, Shiva is shown bearing on his head the crescent moon. He is also known as `Chandrashekara’, which when translated means `One who wears the Moon’. The crescent moon is shown on the side of the Lord’s head as an ornament. The waxing and waning phenomenon of the moon symbolizes the time cycle through which creation evolves from the beginning to the end. Since the Lord is the Eternal Reality, He is beyond time. The wearing of the crescent moon in His head indicates that he has controlled the mind perfectly.
