Comments Man’s eternal quest to improve his life leads him to explore several options. Life is about choosing the right options. The only difference between a lucky man and an unlucky one is that the lucky man finds himself in the right place at the right time (read opportunities) and makes the right choices.  The only factor common among them is hard work – Karma. One of the ways man has explored, to tap the potential of the divine is by using Gemstones. These miracles of nature formed over thousands of years have been one of man’s best friends, philosophers and guides.

The Indian system of Gem recommendation by Jyotish – the science of light has provided miraculous results to people since times immemorial. A Gem recommended on the principles of Vedic Astrology after an in-depth study of the horoscopes and the objectives of the individual is called a Jyotish Gem.

Is that it-No!

Recommendation of a Jyotish Gem is just one part. Selection of a Jyotish Gem is another part. When both recommendation and selection are perfect you get the promised power of a Gemstone.

Before one tries to explore the meaning of a Jyotish Gemstone one should know what is a Gemstone.

What is a Gemstone?

A Gemstone is a fine precious or semi precious mineral that is fit to be used for adornment or for jewellery.  To be regarded as a Gemstone a mineral must be beautiful, rare, and durable.

So what do we get out of this definition?

A Gemstone is fine

A Gemstone is beautiful.

A Gemstone is rare.

A Gemstone is durable.

See the pictures below:

Poor Quality Mineral Sold as Yellow Sapphire in the market for Astrological Purpose. It Fails all Parameters of being a Gemstone let alone being a Jyotish Gemstone Poor Quality Mineral Sold as Yellow Sapphire in the market for Astrological Purpose. It Fails all Parameters of being a Gemstone let alone being a Jyotish Gemstone

This mineral sample sold as Yellow Sapphire fails on every single parameter of being called as a Gemstone:

-          It  is Not beautiful.

It is not rare- This was white in color before being heated and diffused to give it Yellow color. Natural Yellow Sapphires are rare.

Natural Yellow Sapphire of 3.48 carats from the Gemstoneuniverse collection set in 16 Petal Lotus Ring- A True Gemstone Natural Yellow Sapphire of 3.48 carats from the Gemstoneuniverse collection set in 16 Petal Lotus Ring- A True Gemstone

This mineral is a true Gemstone. It qualifies on the definition of a Gemstone.

It is beautiful

It is Rare- Because it’s natural and unheated.

It is Durable.

So Before one selects a Jyotish Gemstone one should first find out a Gemstone.

Why are Jyotish Gems Rare?

A detailed article on what are Jyotish Gemstones can be found here.

“Inward glowing lustre, transparency, illumination with rays, sparkle, free from impurities and good formation of the shape are the characteristics of good gems” -(Agni Purana, 246.13-14).

A Jyotish Gem is rare because for every Gemstone the sacred texts specify that besides being a Gemstone, a Jyotish Gem should be treatment free and be free from certain flaws/ doshas to give desired results. Every single gem has a list of flaws that should be absolutely avoided. This knowledge is not common in the market place. One has to be an expert to select a Jyotish Gemstone.

“If anyone wears a gem of many flaws even out of ignorance, then grief, anxiety, sickness, death, loss of wealth and other evils will torment him” – (Garuda Purana, 70.19).

Only a true Jyotish Gem can harness the energies of the concerned planet and that translates in being in the right place at the right time.

Featured today is a True Jyotish Gem. When we listed this divine gem on Gemstoneuniverse website we described it thus,

Through the looking glass, you look at your future, garbed in the hues of fortunate gold and sparkly brilliance. No. no. That’s not daydreaming. This is precisely what this 4.90 carat beauty could have you peeking into. Behold the oval cut, rich butter yellow sapphire from the Ratnapura mines of Sri Lanka from the lot Amun 2012. It is a completely natural, untreated, unheated Yellow sapphire, which is eye clean and super lustrous. Resonating with abundant energies of Jupiter, it will definitely make a fine and powerful talisman. The solid weight of 4.90 carats will ensure that.

Play the video and see what makes a Jyotish Gem so special, so rare! When a Gem such as this gets set in a ring in an auspicious times and get consecrated and energized with full Vedic Rituals it is an instrument of positive change and blesses its owner with material and spiritual gains.

Which is the best alternative Gemstone to Diamond- and factors affecting White Sapphire price?

December 7, 2012 by gemstoneuniverse Leave a Comment

Which is the best alternative Gemstone to Diamond- and factors affecting White Sapphire price?

Natural White Sapphire of 2.31 carats set in Gold ring Natural White Sapphire of 2.31 carats set in Gold ring

The Gemstone that gives best results as an alternative to Diamond to harness the powers of Venus is a White Sapphire. With hardness just next to the Diamond this gemstone is found rare in Gem Quality.

What is meant by Gem Quality is that the Gem must be free from treatment and excel on all the 4C’s of cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

Jyotish Quality goes a step ahead of Gem Quality and in addition to a Gem being Gem Quality it should lack any of the flaws listed in the Shastras.

The White Sapphire is the purest form of Corundum and is also referred to as the leucosapphire. It is very rare to find a real white sapphire without any tinge of red, pink, green, blue or yellow shade.

Even though top quality flawless gemstones can be found in smaller gemstones of less than .50 carat , a Colorless sapphire in higher weight ranges such as 1.5 carats and above is exceedingly rare.

The most important parameters determining the price of a white sapphire are:

1) Clarity: The first C that affects white sapphire pricing is the clarity. Since it is a Colorless gemstone any kind of visible inclusions bring the price of a white sapphire down. Clarity is paramount.

2) Cut: The cut in a White Sapphire has to be perfect to ensure that pure white light is reflected through its facets. The attention to detail in cut in a White Sapphire is much more as compared to other Sapphires.

3) Treatment:  Most of the White Sapphires are routinely treated to create other colored Sapphires and hence there is a rarity of truly natural and unheated white sapphires.

A Gem can be called as a Gem only if it is Natural and Untreated!

For Jyotish Purposes the white sapphire has to be flawless with no compromises.

Comments The sapphire is an enchanting gemstone. The birthstone for the month of September, the watery clear crystal and mesmerizing blues of sapphire have captivated human beings.

Natural blue sapphire or neelam gemstone is the gem of Lord Saturn / Shani. It is a favorable gemstone for makar lagna and kumbh lagna individuals. In other words, blue sapphire is a favorable gemstone for individuals with Capricorn or Aquarius ascendant.  Blue sapphire assumes special importance for the Vrishabh lagna individual, as Saturn in this case rules the 9th trine house of fate and fortune as well as the 10th quadrant house of profession and karma.

The Millennium Sapphire

Here is one of the world’s most spectacular, in fact the largest sapphire- The Millennium Blue Sapphire. This gem was found in Madagascar with Initially a weight of 90,000 carats. Comments A gem is a real gem when every morning you wake up to look at it in a new found fascination and when all else who behold it, are left awe-struck! Now that’s when you have landed a real treasure.

Featured today is a fantastic natural unheated Ceylon Blue Sapphire. This natural Blue sapphire from Sri Lanka has a great jyotish weight of 4.08 carats and appealing silky cornflower blue color. The gem is flawless and has excellent clarity. The most fascinating factor in this gem is the superb lustre that adds a zing to the gemstone. The crystal clear gem and the lustre allows for the gem’s depth to assume attractively, hypnotic and mysterious dimensions.

In Vedic astrology, natural blue sapphire or neelam is the gemstone of planet Saturn/ Shanidev and can be used in a talisman to harness the powerful transformative energies of a well-placed Saturn in the natal chart.

For a gem to be effective for planetary gem therapy, a gem has to be a jyotish quality gem. Aside of the generally known parameters of 4 C’s, it must be devoid of the doshas mentioned in the sacred texts. Let us take one dosha (among many), for instance, a blue sapphire should not be milky in appearance – such a blue sapphire can bring poverty. At Gemstoneuniverse, you can be sure that the gemstones offered to you are all jyotish quality and have been handpicked to ensure that there are no doshas at all!

Comments Pure, unadulterated energy, divine planetary energy – coursed through the myriad pathways over millions of years and condensed into colourful crystals inside the womb of the earth. Secretly, in faraway confines, it assumed form – something that could be available to humankind, only if it looked hard enough – true treasures that had the power to transform lives – the gemstones.

Featured today is a fine natural and unheated Ceylon yellow sapphire of 3.40 carats. This unheated yellow sapphire of carats has been set in 22-karat gold as a Jupiter talisman ring. The cushion cut gem from Ratnapura mines of Srilanka has a gorgeous canary yellow color and fantastic clarity.

Yellow sapphire or pukhraj stone is the gemstone of Jupiter/ Jove/ Guru/ Brihaspati and is used to harness this planets benevolent energies. For best jyotish results, a natural and unheated yellow sapphire must be used in a talisman.

A question often heard is who should wear a yellow sapphire. Does it bestow good fortune to one and all? The answer to this quandary is that, despite Jupiter being the Devguru and a benevolent planet it is always best to get a proper gemstone recommendation based on analysis of one’s birth chart. An unsuitable gem for an individual can bring about more problems that can be imagined.

Comments “Blue color is everlastingly appointed by the deity to be a source of delight.” —   John Ruskin

Some where deep down in our hearts we have a speculation that Ruskin’s words were inspired by the Sapphire – royal, majestic and so powerful!

Featured today is a natural Ceylon Blue Sapphire of carats, set in 22 karat gold as a Saturn Talisman ring. This Oval shaped Blue sapphire from Sri Lanka with a fantastic jyotish weight of 4.49 carats is fully natural and treatment free. The gem with excellent clarity possesses the coveted Silky cornflower blue color – a rich, delightful color that inspires much more than just poetry.

Natural Blue sapphire of neelam gemstone is the gemstone of planet Saturn/ Shanidev and is used to harness his saatvik, transformative energies.

And when there is a blue sapphire in question, there are hundreds of myths and legends surrounding the gem! It would be worthwhile to point that the great story of Dushyanta and Shakuntala has a Blue Sapphire playing the pivotal role in it.

After King Dushyanta has secretly married Shakuntala he started on his way back to his kingdom but before leaving he gave her a blue sapphire ring and promised that he would come back to get her.

Raja Ravi Verma’s Painting – Shakuntala turning to take a glimpse of King Dushyant

Shakuntala, lovelorn waited endlessly for the king to return and on one such day as she sat reminiscing about the time spent with the King, she forgot to pay respects to Durvasa rishi, who temper was known far and wide. He cursed her that the person whose thoughts she was engrossed in would forget her.

When the sage got to know her story, his rage subsided and he said that the king would remember Shakuntala if she showed him a token/ gift of remembrance.

Shakuntala thought of the ring and set about to meet the king. However, as fate would have it, while in a boat she ran her hands through the sparkling waters and the ring slipped from her fingers to be swallowed by a fish.

Without the ring, she met a very indifferent king who failed to recognise her. Dejected she returned to the forests, where the legendary King Bharat was born to her.

Later after a couple of years had gone by a fisherman turned up at the palace with a brilliant blue sapphire ring that he had found in the stomach of a fish he had caught. King Dushyanta was immediately reminded of Shakuntala and finally went on to find his forgotten wife and son and bring them back to his kingdom.

Comments The word for lustre in Hindi is tej or kanti. When one speaks about an exceptional person, especially who is spiritually charged and more alive with divine energy (which all of us have in varying levels of nurturance), it is this quality that is the most visible aspect. There is a distinct lustre and aura, that sets this person apart.

Likewise the gemstone featured today is a Natural Ceylon Yellow Sapphire of amazing lustre and brilliance. Fully natural, unheated and untreated, this gem from the Ratnapura mines of Srilanka has a medium canary yellow color and a fantastic weight of 3.87 carats. The gem has been set as a yellow sapphire ring in a seat of 22-karat gold and the shanks are sterling silver.

Natural Yellow sapphire or Pukhraj is the gemstone of planet Jupiter also known as Guru or Brihaspati, and is a very popular gemstone, especially in India.

And just as popular a gemstone it is, the market is equally full or all kinds of material that is passed off as natural yellow sapphire, too-good-to-be true-yellow colored sapphire ( heated sapphire that is a fraction of the cost of natural yellow sapphire and has no use in planetary gem therapy), yellow topaz, and oftentimes citrine is palmed off to the unsuspecting buyer.

Please insist on getting gem certificates from your seller. As much as we’d like you to benefit from planetary gem therapy, we would also like you to become an intelligent buyer, for your own sake so that the gem therapy is indeed successful.
