The Garnet family belongs to the chemical family of silicates and neo silicates and contains many different gemstones of virtually all colours except for Blue that is very rare.

The word garnet comes from the 14^th Century Mid English Word’s Gernet meaning dark Red that in turn is derived from the Latin, “Granatus” from “Granum” that literally means a seed or a grain.

Difference between Red Garnet and Hessonite Garnet especially in Vedic Astrology and Jyotish Gemstones Therapy:

Red Garnet is primarily Red in colour and basically comes in two varieties Almandine (Having Iron in its chemical structure) and Pyrope ( Having Magnesium in its chemical structure).

It is called as Tamra in Hindi and Tamra Mani in Sanskrit and is used to harness the powers of Sun( Surya in Vedic Astrology).

Hessonite Garnet is primarily a Grossular Garnet having Orangish Brown, Deep Burnt Cinnamon orange, mix of brown and red and in minority sometimes deep shades of Red. The Hessonite primarily has Calcium in its chemical structure and a good dependable lab will be easily detect the chemical structure and differentiate between the two.

It is called as Gomed or Gomedh in Hindi and Gomedika in Sanskrit and used to harness the powers of Rahu in Vedic astrology. Sometimes because of the colour shade varieties of Pyrope are also included in Hessonite in rare cases.

Red Garnet especially of the Almandine and Pyrope Variety is found in Africa mainly Mozambique and often lesser priced than Hessonite Garnet.

Hessonite is found in Sri Lanka, India (Bihar and Orissa) and parts of Africa and is generally more expensive than Red Garnet.

Gemologists Tip

If you do not have access to quality Gem Lab and equipment the first thing is to trust your eye and colour. If looking for Hessonite try finding a shade of Orangish red or Brownish red.

For Red Garnet the primary colour is only Red with no other mixed colours.
