Comments Featured today is a Yellow sapphire – a natural and unheated premium gem of 2.60 carats from Sri Lanka set in 22-karat yellow gold as a Jupiter talisman ring. The yellow sapphire has a rich golden butter yellow color, superb clarity and electric lustre.http://youtu.be/ckB0Pgmd77Q

Yellow sapphire is known as pukhraj/ pushyaraga or pushparaag in Hindi and is the gemstone of Jupiter/ Guru/ Brihaspati in Vedic astrology.

Yellow sapphire with rich butter yellow or canary yellow colors are the most coveted not only for their color but for the value they fetch! Generally, more the lustre and richer the color of a gem, higher will be its value. Alongside, if the gem is clear and has lesser number of inclusions or clarity characteristics, the value of the gem jumps up still higher.

Yellow sapphire is an amazingly popular gemstone – In India because of the auspiciousness and general notion of good fortune associated with it; and in the West because a good yellow sapphire almost looks like a fancy colored yellow diamond and is fairly hard on the Mohs Scale too (Diamonds measures 10 and sapphire/ corundum measures 9 on the Mohs Scale).

One must be careful while purchasing a jyotish quality natural yellow sapphire. The first pointer is that if a gem is natural and unheated, it will be costly! So if you find a deal that sounds too good to be true, think twice before jumping in.

Richer color fetches better value and that is the reason why many heat-treated yellow sapphires can be found in the market. Heat treatment removes undesirable clarity characteristics of heavily included or dull /cloudy gems, resulting in good-looking gemstones of improved clarity and brilliance.

Low-grade sapphire is also subjected to beryllium treatment to give it a richer yellow color. With beryllium diffusion, the new richer color is changed not only superficially but to a great depth within the stone. For instance a pale or even green color stone subjected to beryllium treatment can change its color and produce a brilliant lovely yellow gemstone as an end result.

In planetary gem therapy, a heat-treated gemstone has no value. Ethical practices dictate that any treatment done to the gemstone should be disclosed. Ask for certification of authenticity. Do not be taken in my any fancy / grand names or epithets that are usually give to substitutes or imitations. The pitch is completely in the name. For instance, peridot is sold under the soubriquet of Evening Emerald. It does NOT make it an emerald!

Plenty of people end up buying citrine, topaz or synthetic gems sold unethically under the name of pukhraj! Caveat emptor! When you have the advantage of information, use it to buy intelligently.

Comments Gemstones are a subject that is explored only if the individual is curious. Of late, there is an increased interest in the world of natural gemstones for not just there value but for the great healing and planetary energy benefits.http://youtu.be/j8RrpFFn1g4

Featured today is a natural and treatment free Peridot of 3.66 carats from Burma set in sterling silver as a Mercury Talisman ring. The symbol of Mercury stands in relief on the shanks of the ring. The rectangular cushion cut peridot has a luscious and deep olive green color and fantastic clarity. Burma is known for it natural gemstones and the gemstone reflects the pedigree through its electric lustre aside of the other appealing characteristics.

Peridot or zabarjad zaytuni is the substitute gemstone of natural emerald/ panna. It is used in a talisman to harness the energies of the planet Mercury/ Budh. It is also known as Chrysolite /Olivine, and finds a mention among the gemstones in the Holy Bible too.

Please take a note that finding a beautifully cut peridot itself makes it a suitable candidate for commanding a premium. Peridot is not an easy gem when it comes to cutting and faceting. The cutter has to be extremely careful about the inclusions not simply because he must cut the gem as to bring out its maximum allure, also because the internal tension of the peridot is pretty high.

This is what master cutter David Clay Zava has to say about fashioning peridot in a Rapaport magazine article – The rough is prone to shattering or cracking during the cutting process – an upshot of its internal molecular tension and an inability to handle heat transference. It’s often difficult to see into, and while being blocky and of potentially high yield, it can contain hairlike inclusions and curly, wandering feathers that can confound the best of cutters.

Comments Featured today is a fantastic natural and unheated ruby from Mozambique set in 22-karat gold as a Sun talisman. The Mozambique ruby of exactly 1 carat has a deep vibrant reddish pink color and great clarity. The manik gem is robust, treatment free and pulsating with planetary powers of the Sun/ Surya.

Scarcity of natural and unheated ruby in the market is a by-product of the seizing of mining operations in Mogok by the military junta in Burma and the ruby supply went quite dry till the Mong Hsu ruby mines were found.

However, the quality of ruby here were nowhere near the pigeon blood red rubies of Mogok. So most of this ruby was treated to improve the appearance and sale value. Most of the Burmese Mong Hsu rubies in the market should be assumed to be treated unless stated otherwise.

Later natural unheated ruby was found in Africa in significant yields in the mines of Tanzania as well as Mozambique – the Winza mine ruby of Tanzania and the Niassa ruby from Mozambique. The advantage that these two sources have is in terms of clarity and color. The counterparts from other mines in the same countries produce inferior grade marble type rubies.

A practised eye can discriminate on basis of sources, the Niassa is fairly easy to distunguish from Winza as blue color zoning  is quite common in Winza ruby is absent here and gives a better reddish pink color. A good natural unheated ruby can beat any other gem in terms of value.

The record price paid for a ruby was $3.6 million, at Christie’s in St. Moritz in 2006 – An 8.62 carat unheated cushion cut Burmese ruby set in a Bvlgari ring. The price of $425,000 per carat set a new record, which was beaten only recently by a blue diamond ring in April 2012 at Sotheby’s New York Magnificent Jewel Auction. The fancy diamond sold for $2.4 million, or $687,712 per carat. The 3.18 ct. VS1 marquise stole the thunder.

Comments Gemstones are truly a miracle of nature. It is only when the love of these precious minerals goes beyond the simple desire of owning fine jewelry or gem that the real world of spectacular creation opens up.

Featured today is a natural Colombian emerald of 1.81 carats set in 22 karat gold as a Mercury talisman ring. The classic emerald cut Colombian emerald is fully natural and has a fine early summer grass green color. What really makes this gem stand apart is the fact that not only is there excellent clarity, despite being an emerald, the gem also has a vitreous lustre, giving it that charismatic appeal!

For planetary gem therapy, the gem must be jyotish quality. For a real appreciation of the jyotish gem that you are holding in your hand and especially more so if it’s an emerald let’s get a little more specific – emerald is a gemstone of the beryl group – Beryllium Aluminium Silicate Al2Be3 (SiO3)6, to be precise.

This gemstone crystal is formed either either in the pegmatite deposits or hydrothermal veins in metamorphic environments. Metamorphic rocks are those rocks, which were once igneous or sedimentary rocks but changed over period of time into a different state due to change in pressure and temperature. (The change however is to be so intense that the rock gets melted and the chemical rearrangement is affected. For instance, Marble is a metamorphic rock that you get when heat and pressure is applied to limestone over a period of thousands of years!)

For an emerald to form, the temperature has to be in the range of 400-500 degrees centigrade and the pressure has to be about 1-3 kilobars per square inch! In other words about 7.5 to 21.75 tons of pressure per square inch! The presence of trace element chromium gives it the rich green color. (in case of the Brazilian emeralds, the color causing trace element is vanadium).

Emerald rough

The mineral is formed within a fluid rich silicate melt that can remain liquid for a very long therefore the cooling time is very long – almost 500 million years!

You may take your time to absorb that information. And we do hope that when you look at the emerald perched on your fingers the next time, you will think about what a treasure, whose life spans an era of geological time, you own!

Natural emerald/ panna is the gemstone of planet Mercury/ Budh and is used in a talisman to harness the energies of this planet.

Comments Natural gemstones have inner, unadulterated energy that makes them very potent tools for Planetary Gem Therapy. Formed naturally due to several geological changes over several hundred million years, these gems have cosmic energy accumulated over eons, residing in them. Just as much is enough to consider the epic proportions in which this energy can profoundly affect human life.http://youtu.be/sDXCcm_v6dU

Featured today is a natural chrysoberyl cat’s eye of 3.79 carats. The oval cut cabochon cat’s eye gemstone from Brazil has a nice greenish yellow color, sharp chatoyancy and translucence – the hallmarks of a good cat’s eye. The gemstone has been set in sterling silver as a cat’s eye Ketu Talisman.

Chrysoberyl Cat’s eye is a fairly hard stone that is 8.5 on the Moh’s Scale of hardness. Cat’s eye is found in the Metamorphic rocks, Pegmatites, which are very coarse-grained igneous rocks, usually granite, that form from water-rich magmas. They are important sources of gem material and crystal specimens. The San Diego Natural History Museum describes such gem formation in Pegmatites very simply and clearly – Picture granite as a mass of hot molten material (magma) below the surface of the earth, cooling slowly into solid rock. If part of the magma contains a lot of water, it will hold more dissolved minerals, and it will cool even more slowly than the surrounding granite. The effect of this very slow cooling of mineral-rich magma is the formation of pockets of large crystals within the granitic rock, commonly found with all the crystals pointing inward. These bodies of rock within a granite mass with large crystals are called pegmatites. Most of the spectacular crystal-producing areas in the world, including Minas Gerais (Brazil), Sri Lanka and San Diego County, are pegmatite areas.

chrysoberyl-mineral Image – Collecting-Rocks-and-Minerals.com

Most of the Cat’s eye gem traded however is found in the placer deposits also – gravely river basins where it finds its way because of its heaviness. The heavier minerals after getting freed from their matrix upon weathering, get concentrated at the bottom of stream, beach, and gravels. The earliest and simpler mining and finding of gems started with scouring through such deposits.

Cat’s eye also known as Vaidurya/ lehsunia/ Bidalaksh is the gem of the South Node of the Moon or Ketu. The phenomenal gemstone is a fast acting gem and is used in a talisman to harness saatvik energies of Ketu, restore semblance, focus and direction in the life of the wearer.

Comments Feast your eyes on a real treat! Featured today is a superfine natural, unheated Ceylon yellow sapphire – a premium oval gem of 2.06 carats set in 22 Karat gold as a Jupiter Talisman pendant. The gem has the finest golden yellow color that is rich and gives it an imposing presence. This Ceylon yellow sapphire has excellent clarity, an electric lustre and adamantine brilliance, so pronounced that the onlooker is bedazzled with diamond like brilliant flashes!

In vedic astrology, Yellow sapphire or Pukhraj is the gemstone of Jupiter/ Guru/ Brihaspati and is used to harness his saatvik powers in planetary gem therapy.

A gemstone is mostly measured on the benchmark of 4C’s to ascertain its value and ‘fineness’ (barring of course, cases where the gem is so very rare that only rarity becomes the value determining factor). While color clarity and carat weight are well discussed parameters, the ‘cut’ is the least discussed.

Round brilliant diamond - What is what in your diamond Round brilliant diamond – What is what in your diamond

When you look at this gem it is one of the finest specimens of colored gem lapidary. Lapidary or the art of gem cutting and faceting is not as simple as it may seem on the surface. The story with diamonds is different with the cutter looking for accentuating the brilliance, dispersion and scintillation. While the oblique pavilion facets throw back the light causing brilliance, the crown facets cause the dispersion and give the resultant ‘fire’ to the diamond. A round brilliant cut (any caratage, even the minutest) diamond has 58 facets (culet included). It is these large number of facets that scintillation or the twinkling effect!

The world of colored gemstones is much more complicated because of two major factors – firstly the colored gemstones possess lesser dispersion and secondly the presence of color (the prize factor) needs to highlighted keeping the nature of the crystal structure of gemstone and mineral characteristics in consideration. The colored gemstone also shows several shades at different angles.

The way the pavilion of a gem is fashioned, more specifically the size and angle of the pavilion facet that often determines, how the light is thrown back to the eye and consequently how brilliant the gem appears. It is important to understand that different gem minerals have different refractive indices. Aside of the angle of pavilion, the critical angle of the gem is extremely critical too. The critical angle of a gem is inversely proportional to the refractive index of a gem.

For instance if the light falls outside the critical angle of the gemstone (which it will, if the pavilion angle is not fashioned correctly), only the total internal reflection occurs and light rays are unable to exit the surface and give a brilliant appearance!

Action of a path of light within a gemstone. Courtesy University of Wisconsin-Madison Action of a path of light within a gemstone. Courtesy University of Wisconsin-Madison

However, if the pavilion facet is fashioned in keeping with the critical angle of the gemstone, the light finds the right exits (without causing total internal reflection) giving a brilliant appearance to the gem. This is called Planned leakage and is completely in the hands of a master gem cutter! The longer the path of a ray, the more brilliance will be seen and harmonious energies will be absorbed by the body.

However, the greater incidence in the world of gemstones is that the tremendous possibilities that lie dormant within the heart of a gemstone are sacrificed for retaining a larger caratage, by fashioning it, without much thought on how the light could be made to play up its color and beauty!

Many people talk about Jyotish Gemstones and Jyotish Quality but fail at the very first parameter which is the cut. A Jyotish Gems has the perfect cut to maximize the play of light.

Reject all other samples which have a cut made just to save weight and sacrificing on brilliance and the play of light.

At Gemstoneuniverse, you can expect to find the best of lapidary work in colored gemstones too. And do remember, it is only when the cutter works his magic that the gem makes the Cut!

Our commitment to Planetary Gem Therapy is absolute and every single Gemstone that makes it to the Gemstoneuniverse inventory is a true Jyotish Gem.

Next time when you evaluate a Gem for Jyotish Quality the first thing you should look for is the cut!

Comments The Fine Ceylon Blue Sapphire is a perfect example of the most essential qualities of a Jyotish Gemstone.

“Inward glowing lustre, transparency, illumination with rays, sparkle, free from impurities and good formation of the shape are the characteristics of good gems” -(Agni Purana, 246.13-14).

In Today’s world of modern Gemology when the expert has the access to modern instruments and tools and a wealth of information one cannot just stop, wonder and admire how accurate the Shastras (sacred texts) are  for what are called as a features of a Gemstone.

The first striking feature in this Blue Sapphire is its adamantine brilliance and that is the inward glowing lustre and illumination with rays that the Agni Purana is talking about.

Beautiful much sought after Kashmir Color, scintillating cut, electric lustre, and lack of treatment such as heat make it a potent and powerful Jyotish Gemstone. In fact the features of this Blue Sapphire are so perfect so premium that it is at the apex of Gem pyramid and can be used to make fine jewellery.

In Garuda Purana, Sri Sut Ji Goswami says in the Chapter 72, “The Blue Sapphire subjected to heat or burning to improve color and clarity should never be used by anyone as illness and misfortune will fall on that individual who uses a heated and a burned gem.”

The Gemstoneuniverse Value Advantage

At Gemstoneuniverse our patrons are as dear to us as our Gemstones and our love for Planetary Gem Therapy. You can view the video above and enjoy the fine miracle of nature.

However, We would like to draw your attention to one fact, as and when a Gem is listed on the Gemstoneuniverse website the date of listing is clearly mentioned on the bottom of the page.

This Blue Sapphire was listed on 07th March 2010 at a price of $650 per carat. Today we are in June 2012 and this is the sourcing cost of a Treatment Free, 3+ carats Blue Sapphire with features equivalent of above.

As specified before, once a Gem is listed its price never gets changed despite market conditions or rarity. That is the Gemstoneuniverse value addition. We have a strong belief that each Gemstone has its own destiny just like each human being is unique and has its own destiny.

A True Gem chooses Its Owner-A Gem Is for a Gem

Comments The Imperial golden yellow topaz is one of the fabulous gemstones known to man. It is unfortunate however, that the gem’s equity has taken a serious hit owing to the confusion caused by unscrupulous/  little knowing sellers who have pushed citrine at the buyer in the name of topaz.

Look at the lovely natural Imperial golden yellow topaz from Brazil of 3.06 carats set in sterling silver as Jupiter talisman ring. The gem is a classic emerald cut with amazing imperial golden yellow color and excellent clarity. The gem is loupe clean and is free from any treatment.

Golden imperial yellow topaz is the substitute gem for natural yellow sapphire/ pukhraj gemstone and is used to harness the saatvik energies of Jupiter / Guru/ Brihaspati.

Look at this imperial golden yellow topaz and then take a look at citrine and you will instantly know the difference. Citrine is a member of the quartz family with a rating of 7 on Mohs Scale, where as Topaz is a different mineral altogether that measures 8 on the Mohs Scale.

Citrine

Citrine is sold under various names – gold topaz, or Madeira or Spanish topaz or even Saxon topaz. Please note that Citrine is a variety of Quartz and isn’t Topaz!

It will be interesting for you to note that although natural citrine is available, most of the citrine available on the markets is heat treated amethyst (amethyst belongs to the same quartz group as citrine)! Sometimes Ametrine also can be found, it is a variety of quartz that contains both amethyst and citrine sectors in the same crystal.

Ametrine

Now for the purpose of planetary gem therapy,

Would you –

a)Wear a gem that is heat-treated?

b)Wear a gem that is recommended as a substitute gem for blue sapphire for Saturn?

c) Wear a gem that gives no tangible results astrologically?

We, at Gemstoneuniverse endeavour to give you the best be it value for your money or a piece of jewellery you will cherish, a talisman that makes a qualitative difference in your life or for that matter knowledge regarding gems.
