The Color Red – The Allure of a Ruby

The Color Red – The Allure of a Ruby

Natural Ruby of 1.13 Carats Gemstoneuniverse

Natural Ruby of 1.13 Carats Gemstoneuniverse

Color is the essence of life. It’s magic conjured up by the play of light with elements of nature! And because human beings use faculty of sight that differentiates among things in a large way by sight, color is fundamental to evoking response – love, dislike, attraction, ambivalence and much more. The world of colored gemstones is fascinating for precisely the same reason. It’s the enticing color, a distinct personality of the gem that makes it stand apart!

copyscapegemstoneuniverse1

Rubies have fascinated human beings for a long time now – a gem, which our ancestors viewed in awe as they believed that a fire burned within it! Intense deep red – the ruby is a splendorous gem. Ruby is the mineral Corundum, which is aluminum oxide (Al2O3). Aluminum is displaced by chromium (Cr 3+) anything between 1-3 percent of its total amount in the mineral.

The richer the color more is the premium commanded by the gem! The best rubies of the world are without a shadow of doubt from Burma with the imperial pigeon blood color. However, for their relative unavailability and prohibitive prices (in what is up for grabs) the newer treasures of Africa seem to have arrived just in time. Among the African rubies, the ones coming from Mozambique and Tanzania have better clarity and richer color.

However, how do you know that what you are wearing is categorized in the gem world as a ruby or a pink sapphire. The saturation of color is the key here. Rubies command a much greater price than a pink sapphire (pink corundum, after all, sapphire base mineral is corundum too!) There is deep resistance to adopting the color saturation index for many gems hitherto classified, as ruby will just end up as fancy color pink sapphires!

What Are Phenomenal Gemstones-Under the Spell of a Mystical and Flirtatious Gem – Cat’s Eye Eye Chrysoberyl

Under the Spell of a Mystical and Flirtatious Gem – Cat’s Eye Eye Chrysoberyl

Natural Chrysoberyl Cats eye of 3.85 carats Gemstoneuniverse

Natural Chrysoberyl Cats eye of 3.85 carats Gemstoneuniverse

Cat’s eye chrysoberyl is a gem that belongs to the category of phenomenal gemstones. The word Chrysos in Greek means ‘golden’ indicating a gold colored Gem- it is in fact beryllium aluminum oxide that has a transparent to translucent pale yellow to golden green color.

copyscapegemstoneuniverse1

The rutile needles in the internal crystal structure of chrysoberyl cats eye enable it to play in an exceptional way with light and displays an optical property called chatoyancy – or a sharp band that stretches across the surface of the gem and facilitates like opening or closing of cat’s eye as light falls across the gem. The more numerous the silk or inclusions, the sharper the chatoyant band would be. The effect is enhanced when the gem is cut like a cabochon, with the under surface left rather rough to allow maximum display on the surface.

Diamond and Cats eye Chrysoberyl Owl Pendant Brooch Cartier Skinner

Diamond and Cats eye Chrysoberyl Owl Pendant Brooch Cartier SkinnerIt is a fine gem that has been used by man to enhance his luck at games of chance. The value of a cat’s eye or any other phenomenal gemstone for that matter is also determined by the intensity of the optical phenomenon aside of the 4C’s of cut, color, clarity and carat weight. The sharper the chatoyancy along with translucence in a cat’s eye, the greater will be the price commanded by the gem.  Cat’s eye is has a hardness of 8.5 on the Moh’s Scale. The mystical properties of the cat’s eye include protecting against evil eye and multiplying wealth.

Legendary Ceylon – The Land of Sapphires and Unmatched Bounty

February 11, 2013 by gemstoneuniverse 1 Comment

Legendary Ceylon – The Land of Sapphires and Unmatched Bounty

ceylon gem map

The best of blue sapphires are the ones that came from the mountains of Kashmir. But now since that source has allegedly been dry for long, the best source for rich blue sapphires is Sri Lanka or Ceylon. The island nation of Sri Lanka has been long known as the land of jewels. In mythology, it is also known as Ratna-dweepa – a land so lush and rich with jewels of all kinds that its legends inspired many a dangerous expeditions to this Island Serendib.

copyscapegemstoneuniverse1

It features in the adventures of Sindbad the sailor, who in his sixth voyage finds himself at the island of Ceylon and it is described thus – Now the Island Sarandib lieth under the equinoctial line, its night and day both numbering twelve hours. It measureth eighty leagues long by a breadth of thirty and its width is bounded by a lofty mountain and a deep valley. The mountain is conspicuous from a distance of three days, and it containeth many kinds of, rubies and other minerals, and spice trees of all sorts. The surface is covered with emery, wherewith gems are cut and fashioned; diamonds are in its rivers and pearls are in its valleys.

sindbad

Sindbad himself was from the city of Basra, close to the Persian Gulf, which was the ancient trading centre for the best of precious natural pearls! Richard Hughes in his seminal book “Ruby and Sapphire” explains that the word serendipity, which means a sudden fortunate discovery or stumbling upon a treasure suddenly, is derived from the name of the island’s name Serendib – a place where the adventurers would stumble upon treasures every now and then!

Even today, the soil of southern Sri Lanka is so rich with natural treasures that sometime all people have to do is to look in their backyards and have a serendipitous moment.Fortunately or unfortunately, the main technique of gem exploration as well as mining in Sri Lanka is still the traditional methods – where gravel is run through water in troughs and baskets. The Ratnapura region was the first locality to mine sapphire on the island. Significant gem-mines throughout Sri Lanka are the Bibile, Elehara, Ratnapura, Metiyagoda, Morawaka, Nuwara Eliya and Pelmadulla sapphire mines.

The Ceylon Blue sapphire stands distinctly apart from its sapphires from other sources – with a watery crystal clarity and rich medium toned blue.

Negotiating Skills in the Gemstone Trade

January 29, 2013 by gemstoneuniverse Leave a Comment

Negotiating Skills in the Gemstone Trade

I know of a man who wanted to become a gem dealer and eventually succeeded. One of the biggest surprises in the early stages of his career was that no one, no matter where he travelled, would tell him what something was worth. He finally came to realize that the price of something was based on his negotiating skills.
He became an extremely tough negotiator. One day in India he was having trouble making a deal. He reminded the seller that his asking price was higher than the last time, to which the lapidary replied; “The last time you were here my children had no milk.” He felt ashamed that he had pushed the man that far and became less aggressive in his negotiations.

I know people who go to great lengths to get the very best possible price. They think they are cleaver business people and I can’t argue with that. However, what is right for one person isn’t right for everyone.
I am at the other extreme. Before beginning negotiations, I realize that something is only a good deal if both parties make a profit. I also recognize that time is money. Both I and the other party are small business owners and our time is precious. I make an offer, then one or two counter offers and if we can’t reach an agreement I move on.
My priority isn’t just making a purchase or sale, it’s establishing long term relationships and being respectful of the other party is essential to that end. Before leaving, I always ask, “Is there anything else I can do for you?” or “Is there anything else you need?” Simply asking these questions lets them know that I am thinking about their well being, not just myself.

I also get some surprising answers. People have told me that they need something that I would never think to ask about, but am able to get. It turns into an extra sale for me and helps my customer.

The culture you are working in often has an effect on how you deal. I once saw a necklace, containing about 100 carats of matched green opals, brought into a jewellery store. A wealthy foreign customer was there and wanted the piece. The jeweller told him that, since it had just come in, she would offer it at an exceptionally low price. He wanted to negotiate the price, but since the initial offer was already rock bottom the jeweller couldn’t move. He refused the deal simply because he felt he needed to negotiate on the price.

Had the jeweller been familiar with his customs, she could have made the sale.

There is no one right way to conduct business; each of us has to find our own style. Above are some considerations to help you find the right balance for your business.

Sincerely,
Donald Clark CSM IMG
President
International Gem Society

You just purchased an Unheated Emerald- It’s quite likely that you don’t have a Jyotish Gemstone.

You just purchased an Unheated Emerald- It’s quite likely that you don’t have a Jyotish Gemstone.

Unrealistic Expectations based on poor information leads to poor results Unrealistic Expectations based on poor information leads to poor results

Did You Just Lose Yourself in The Jargon? Wake Up to the Smell of Coffee and the Brilliance of a Genuine Jyotish Gemstone.

&

Are Emeralds ever heated?

Do you remember the time, when the herbal remedies were hot and fancied by one and all? Subsequent to that wave, there was no line of treatment or product that did not exploit the word Herbal to suit its ends. Likewise, there are many vendors with barely enough knowledge, trying to cash in on the buzzwords and the jargon without knowing what it means.

The ignorance is appalling for instance when one reads that a trader specializing in Planetary Vedic Natural Astrological Gemstones lists Unheated Emeralds for sale? It’s an oxymoron. There is nothing known as an unheated Emerald and Emerald does not go through heat treatment.

It is easy for a business minded entity to harvest some keywords and drive traffic to the site. All one needs to do is to have a generous sprinkling of words like Astrological, Natural, Jyotish, Unheated, Untreated etc!

You might also want to have a look at

Natural, Untreated, Expensive Gemstone and Still not Jyotish Quality! Surprised¦. Read on

So Jyotish Quality Gemstones are not everybodys cup of tea.

The markets are abuzz with jargon and big words that seem to imply credibility. However is that really enough. An individual may succeed in partially educating oneself about precious gemstones but it requires almost an obsessive passion to get to the bottom of things as the world of gemstones is complex.

You may not just be required to know about origins, pricing, physical, optical and chemical properties but should be fully aware of what differentiates a genuine from a fake masquerading as real! And that is really in depth and does not come by skimming the surface.

An individual looking for a genuine Jyotish gemstone will do his part in researching and reading but once faced by the real goods, it is sometimes extremely difficult even for the seasoned professional to distinguish a treated gem from an untreated one and a natural from a synthetic.

While one can secure one parameter by ensuring that the search is only for Jyotish gems – natural, untreated and unheated, devoid of doshas mentioned in the sacred texts.  However, whether you are getting the real thing or not is again a matter of debate.

A lot depends upon the vendor or the agency selling you the gems also. While they may claim to deal in Jyotish quality gemstones they often make a slip in staking claims about their gems. For instance, a vendor on the Internet is selling Jyotish quality natural unheated emeralds – but the BIG QUESTION is whether the emeralds are ever heated at all?!

Emeralds are a kind of beryl, a relatively softer gemstone with a ranking of 7 on Moh’s scale. Also emerald has a relatively lesser melting point compared to other gemstones like sapphire that can be heated. Heating an emerald can cause it to become even more fragile than it is to begin with. The emerald would actually be destroyed if this were done!

This is precisely the reason why emeralds are not subjected to glass filling treatment. Emeralds are usually oil treated, resin filled (which again would be potentially harmful for the gem in the long run) and dyed!

So the vendor – or shall we call him a “trader” who is trying to sell emeralds harping on their virtue of being unheated, is either ignorant about the processes and in turn about the gems he is dealing in or is just pushing goods on the basis of awareness – Client NEED/ His Greed and a hunch that mouthing the right sounding words will close the deal.

Only an expert who has circumambulated the world of gems with a passion, a hunger for knowledge, an adventurers edge and a real desire to achieve excellence will be able to guide you towards the genuine Jyotish quality gemstone.

Empower yourself with the right knowledge and make a good choice rather than tallying the keyword list.

Natural Blue Sapphire of 4.02 carats

Natural Blue Sapphire of 4.02 carats

Even though there are many parameters that need to be factored in before one can choose one’s special gemstone the foundation rests on the classical 4C’s.

What are the 4C’s of colored Gemstones?

The 4C method was formally developed by the GIA-Gemological Institute of America. These 4C’s are

Cut

Color

Clarity

Carat Weight

Cut

The overall Shape or design of a gemstone is referred to as the cut. The cut of a colored gemstone also has significant bearing on the price per carat. Some gemstones are traditionally cut in particular shapes. Like the Emerald has always commanded more price when cut in the Emerald cut, and Sapphires are considered more desirable in the oval cuts.

Classical Gem Cuts Chart

Classical Gem Cuts ChartWhat ever may be the cut, it has to be made sure that the maximum play and penetration of light takes place so as to bring out the brilliance and scintillation of the color of the gemstone.

The more masterfully crafted the gemstone the better the polish and blemish free surface the costlier the gemstone.

Exotic and unusual shapes, like round, Pear etc are priced at a premium as shaping the gems into these shapes leads to more wastage of the raw material/gem roughs.

A good cut adds beauty to a Gemstone and ensure that each facet reflects light in an alluring manner.

Color.

In the world of colored Gemstone everything is color. The more alluring the color, more is the beauty of the gemstone. The world color in the world of Gemstones is not so simple. Color is everything in a colored Gemstone. Gemstone color is made up of Hue Tone and Saturation.

The purest color begets premium price. By purest we mean that minimal to no hues of other colors are present in it, have high levels of saturation and also have the best tones. Also one must keep in mind that color may vary from region to region.

Color itself is made of hue, tone and Saturation.

Hue: Impression of color immediately such as red, blue or Violet is known as Hue.

Colored Gemstones Hue Chart

Colored Gemstones Hue ChartTone:  The degree of lightness or darkness of an object is referred to as the tone

Colored Gemstones Tone Chart

Colored Gemstones Tone ChartSaturation: Degree of purity of the hue is the Saturation.

When you are evaluating color you should also try to assess how would a Gemstone look after being set in a finished piece of Jewellery?

The Same gemstone would look remarkably different in 18K Yellow Gold, 18K White Gold, 18K Rose Gold or on use of extra design elements or use of accent gemstones etc.

The Gemologist’s expertise should be leveraged to get a good color and the Gemologist’s experience will ensure maximum value for the client.

Just focus on one color to keep this simple. Are all blues same. No they are not. Notice the sheer range of Blue

Just focus on one color to keep this simple. Are all blues same. No they are not. Notice the sheer range of Blue

Clarity

The relative freedom from inclusions is known as clarity characteristics. Lesser the clarity characteristics better the Gemstone. Although inclusions that do not hinder the beauty or color of the gemstones are generally acceptable!

And also fine inclusions are proof that the gem is natural and untreated. However there are some gemstones in which fine characteristic inclusions are accepted, like Emeralds and to some extent Rubies. Gemmologists refer to these fine inclusions in Emeralds as Jardins.

Carat Weight

Colored Gemstones are measured in carats. 1 carat is equivalent to approximately 0.2 grams. Carat weight is sometimes also expressed in cents or points. 100 points/ 100 cents are equivalent to 1 carat. Hence 57 points means .57 carats.

Provided the Gemstone excels on the above 3 C’s the higher the carat weight the rarer the Gemstone but please don’t be confuse a gemstone and a stone. A brick is not equivalent to a diamond. More details here.

The rectangular cushion cut with a finely faceted pavilion is making the cut scintillating and ensures a maximum play of light. See how a good cut makes the electric lustre make a profound effect on the senses.

The Color is silky cornflower blue a much desired colored in Sapphires. Ravishing color that is making the Sapphire look royal. Notice the even spread of color throughout the crystal and that when combining with the cut described above is making it very special. The exceptional clarity is again adding value and the best part is it is 4+ carats. To get an unheated earth mined Sapphire at this weight is very rare.

This Blue Sapphire get a befitting setting in a silver ring with the sacred Saturn symbols and it gets further empowered with the sacred ash of Lord Saturn-Shani sealed in the tow tubes around the Blue Sapphire. A truly liberating and empowering Planetary Talisman par excellence.

The Gemstoneuniverse Value Addition:

This Particular Blue Sapphire was listed in October 2010 at Gemstoneuniverse but went to its owner in January 2013. Listed at a price of $685 per carat at the time of listing this will not be the sourcing cost today given its features and the 4C’s. As always, once a Gem is listed the price never gets changed at Gemstoneuniverse and we firmly believe that a Jyotish Gem chooses its owner rather than the other way around.
