Hessonite is a variety of Grossular Garnet – it is basically a Silicate of Calcium and Aluminum. It gets its orangy brown color from the trace elements of iron and/ or manganese. The name Grossular is said to have originated due to the resemblance of the crystal to gooseberries, for which the Latin word is Grossularia.
