Hessonite is a variety of Grossular Garnet – it is basically a Silicate of Calcium and Aluminum. It gets its orangy brown color from the trace elements of iron and/ or manganese. The name Grossular is said to have originated due to the resemblance of the crystal to gooseberries, for which the Latin word is Grossularia.
Hessonite is produced fairly abundantly (this comparison is strictly vis-à -vis nature’s production of other gemstones only!) in nature.
