‘Bhasma’ literally means that, which has been consumed by fire. And by corollary, that, which has been consumed by fire stands sanctified. Bhasma has tremendous importance and is an integral component of the Hindu way of life. In common parlance, the word bhasma is used to describe the ‘sacred herbal ash’.
