The Blue Sapphire is one of the most famous and desirable gemstones. The demand for fine quality Blue Sapphires has remained stable since ages and Blue sapphires remains an important component in the famous troika of the “Big 3” of the Colored Gemstones world. The big 3 of the Colored Gemstones world are Ruby, Emerald and Blue Sapphire.

What influences the quality of a Blue Sapphire and what is meant by best quality Blue Sapphire?

There are several factors that contribute a sapphire to be a best quality Blue Sapphire. Even though there are minor differences of opinion regarding what exactly is the best quality Blue Sapphire most of the experts and Gemologists agree of on the factors given below in determining quality of a Blue Sapphire.

Colour- The top consideration that affects Blue Sapphire quality is colour. The best quality Blue Sapphire exhibits a rich blue color with high saturation. Blue Sapphires that have an inky appearance or are too dark or are too light devalue a gemstone. Presence of two color shades which is generally found in commercial quality stones devalues a gemstone. Blue Sapphire with a pure hue of Blue followed by slight shades of violet is considered to be good quality in Sapphires. Top shades of a Blue sapphire are classified as Cornflower Blue, Royal Blue, Electric Blue and Silky deep blue.  If the sapphire has a tint of green or a huge amount of purple tint it costs lesser and is considered of a lower quality.

Clarity- The second consideration when grading the best quality Blue Sapphire is the clarity. Clarity is directly proportional to transparency and the more clear a Blue Sapphire is it will be more brilliant, dazzling and sparkling. Aim for Eye clean clarity. Minor inclusions like silk or feathers that are not on the face of the gemstone but somewhere on the edges or are inconspicuous actually add value to the Blue sapphire. Fine Silk is almost a feature of majority of the Kashmir Sapphires. The fine silk actually adds to the allure of the fine velvety silk blue colour of the Kashmir Sapphires. Too much of silk will devalue a gemstones as it makes the sapphire appear to be grey.

Cut- The third consideration while grading the best quality in Blue Sapphire is the cut. In general the most valued cuts in Blue Sapphires are ovals and cushions followed by rounds and in some cases even the emerald cut is also seen. A good cut ensures that there is good symmetry that ensures maximum play of light so that the Blue Sapphire looks brilliant, dazzling and full of life as light passes through its various facets. Poor and commercial quality Blue sapphires are cut to retain weight. This devalues the quality and this quality of junk stones is basically sold in volume driven markets.

Carat weight- The fourth consideration while grading best quality blue sapphire is the carat weight. If a Blue Sapphire excels on all three parameters above then the price of the best quality blue sapphire shall move by geometrical progression. A Gemstone weighing 1 carat retailed for $1000 if having the same clarity, cut and color but weighing 2 carats may cost $4000 and above. Most of the quality Sapphires traded are priced between $300-$12,000 per carat (data as of December 2014). Premium and collectible quality can also go till $130,000-150,000 per carat.  Low quality commercial grade stones in India cost around $50-$100 per carat. Commercial quality heated treated or beryllium diffused sapphires used in costume jewellery cost from $100-$250 per carat. The above guidelines are for transactions of single gemstones. The prices will vary if the transaction is being done for a lot.

Origin- It’s an important consideration. The top three more preferred origins for a Blue Sapphire are Kashmir, Burma and Ceylon/ Sri Lanka. Blue Sapphires from these origins command more price and value as compared to other regions.

Treatment: A very important factor in Blue Sapphire pricing and quality determination is treatment. A fully natural and untreated gemstone is rarer and will command a higher price as compared to a heat treated, diffused, glass filled or enhanced Gemstone. Synthetic and imitation Blue Sapphires have existed in the market since early 1900’s and cost peanuts. One should also be careful of similar looking stones like kyanite and tanzanite being sold in volume driven markets as Blue Sapphires with dubious certificates.
