Are you sure you are really buying a White Sapphire & Not a tinted Sapphire
Poor Quality Tinted Sapphires sold as White Sapphires in Indian Markets- Unravelling the Truth
Sometime back we received an interesting communication that read:
Thank you very much for the gemstone report. You have recommended me to wear a White Sapphire in the ring finger of right hand. I do not have the budget to wear a Jyotish quality White Sapphire of the Gemstoneuniverse website. Here in Delhi, I have found a 80% white Sapphire that has a shade of Yellow. It is in my budget. Can I wear it? Will it give the same results? The shopkeeper says it will work?
Now looking at the query above it can be either as case of pure ignorance, lack of awareness, straight denial because in gemmological terms there is nothing in this world yet that is 80% white sapphire. Either it is a 100% white Sapphire or its not.
Secondly, the intentions of the vendor/ shopkeeper as per the person who sent the mail message are malafide and is equivalent to straight fraud with the sole intention of selling poor quality material backing it with ambiguous statements. Many of the gem therapy failures are because of such situations.
Rarity of the White Sapphire
Natural white sapphires are a very rare occurrence. Most of the near colourless sapphire are pale brown or muddy in colour. They are heated to give them pure white shade. Heated gemstones have no use for harnessing planetary powers and give zero results.
That effectively makes 75% of the supply redundant or useless. We are then left to work with 25%. Please note that for Astrological purposes a Gemstone has to be a true Jyotish Gemstone excelling on several factors. When these factors are evaluated another 10-15% of White Sapphires are eliminated and then what we are left with is a mere 10%. That is why today the availability of a True Jyotish White Sapphire is rarer than a Natural Ruby.
Amongst all Jyotish Gemstones that we carry the most difficult to obtain is the White Sapphire. See example below.
This Lot carefully selected over 6 months and certified as “Natural Sapphires” is only half the work done
This lot of 10 natural sapphires took us around 6 months to assemble. Now see the colour rating. Some got the colour rating as Faint Yellow, Pale orange, Faint Green. A good Gemstone Lab with the right equipments would be able to detect, identify and state these tints. These Sapphires with tints automatically get disqualified and cannot be used as White Sapphires.
Only Sapphires that a have colour grade of “ Colourless” or “ White” make the grade and can be used as White Sapphires otherwise not. So you can see that after viewing and rejecting several lots for over 6 months we assembled a small lot very assiduously and 80% of that lot got colour tints and got rejected.
The hard work and patience of 6 months came to a naught with 80% of the lot having tints. Majority of the labs in India would have certified these as White Sapphires
This gemstone is so rare. It is for these precise reasons that Jyotish Gemstone delivers the results that only they are capable of. At the time of writing this piece (06th May 2015), we have a steady traffic of 2 million visitors which is quite large for such a niche subject like planetary gemology. Despite having such a huge potential clientele we are not able to fill up the white sapphire inventory.
Why- The capacity of nature to produce fine gemstones is limited and for the reasons discussed above.
Most of the laboratories in India would have classified the above lot as White Sapphire due to lack of expertise and equipment. Many of the customers just need a written document and do not have the background or the experience to actually evaluate the quality or the value of that content. We at Gemstoneuniverse take the guess work out and deliver huge value to our end users.
Like the example above of the person who has sent the mail message, please do not fall prey to lies like it is 80% white sapphire and end up buying poor quality goods that are at the bottom of the gem pyramid just to satisfy your psyche.
Always go back to the classic- Do Gems work- No they don’t for 90% of the people. If you cannot afford a real white sapphire then wear a real flawless White Zircon but don’t play along lie statements such as 70% or 90% white sapphire etc. If you do not have the budget for that also its better to wait rather than wasting money on something that delivers Zero results.
If you are opting for White Sapphire certification from an Indian Lab, then the GII lab at Mumbai which is recognized by CIBJO is a good option as they have the equipment and the expertise to identify and grade tinted sapphires that are sold in the market as White Sapphires.
